See one another and share your computer screen with others. Zoom has a free basic service that lets you make video calls and participate in video conferences. Skype, Google Hangouts and other video calling services are out there, but Zoom works smoothly and is fairly easy to learn.

Zoom with Your Phone or iPad

  1. Load the Zoom app from the app store
  2. After you enter your info, don’t allow Zoom to access your contacts. You can add them individually when you wish. Enter their email addresses.
  3. When you receive an invitation to join a Zoom meeting: Your host will send you a link to join a particular meeting. Simply click on it and open your Zoom app if it is not already open.

Zoom with Your Laptop Computer

  1. Go to Zoom.com
  2. Select “Sign up for free”
  3. Enter your email address. Zoom sends you an email. Open the email and sign in.
  4. Download the app
  5. When you receive an invitation to join a Zoom meeting: Your host will send you a link to join a particular meeting. Simply click on it and open your Zoom app if it is not already open.

Tips

  1. In “video” you can go to settings. Say yes to Enhance and no to Mirror.
  2. Pay attention to your background that the camera sees. Zoom lets you choose “Virtual Backgrounds.”
  3. Add your photo to settings and you can have that display rather than a live image of yourself.
  4. Use earbuds or a headset with a microphone, rather than your computer’s microphone; you’ll get better sound.
  5. Consider shining soft lights on yourself to avoid unflattering shadows.
