“Mineta San Jose International Airport’s newest tenant, Virgin America Airways, began service today with a gala ceremony attended by the airline’s colorful founder, Sir Richard Branson.
Branson lived up to his reputation in his remarks to the audience, which included Mayor Chuck Reed and Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren.
“This virgin does go the whole way,” Branson boasted.
Virgin America CEO David Cush explained the airline chose to begin in San Jose with flights to Los Angeles rather than transcontinental service to New York or other East Coast destinations because of their marketing strategy.
“It allows us to come into the market with a little bit less risk,” he reported, “and assuming we’re successful, the transcon[tinental] flights will come.”
Cush said it would likely be at least the spring of 2014 before Virgin America expands service in San Jose to include transcontinental flights.”
